The AP for strong writers. Rhetorical analysis, synthesis from multiple sources, and persuasive argument — the most direct measure of college-level writing ability.

AP English Language and Composition tests analytical reading and persuasive writing across three essay types: synthesis (combining multiple sources), rhetorical analysis (dissecting how a writer argues), and argument (constructing your own position). Plus 55 MCQ on passage-based rhetoric.
Three essays, three rubrics
Each essay has its own 6-point rubric. The synthesis essay rewards evidence integration; the rhetorical analysis rewards technique identification (ethos, logos, pathos, diction, syntax); the argument essay rewards clear thesis and logical structure. Mastering all three is the path to a 5.

Why even strong students miss a 5.
These are the three traps we see most often in AP AP English Language diagnostics — and every one is fixable with focused coaching.
No thesis
Each essay requires a defensible thesis in the first paragraph. Students who launch into evidence without a thesis cap at 3/6.
Source stacking
Synthesis essays that just list source summaries without integrating them into an argument score poorly. We teach integration technique in week 2.
Vague rhetorical terms
Saying "the author uses rhetoric" scores nothing. Identifying specific techniques — anaphora, juxtaposition, periodic sentence — scores full marks.
