AP Chemistry,
reaction-deep,
FRQ-ready.
The most demanding AP science for content depth. Atomic structure, bonding, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics and electrochemistry — with lab-based FRQs that demand real experimental reasoning.
The most demanding AP science. Nine units of theory plus lab-based FRQs — essential for pre-med, chemistry and chemical engineering pathways.
AP Chem is the hardest AP science for most students — and the most coachable.
AP Chemistry is widely considered the hardest AP science. Nine units cover atomic theory through electrochemistry, with calculations that are genuinely college-level — Hess's law, equilibrium ICE tables, buffer pH calculations, electrochemical cell potentials. The FRQs demand both mathematical precision and lab-based reasoning.
Why lab-based FRQs matter
At least 2 of 7 FRQs involve designing or interpreting experiments. Students with no lab reasoning practice consistently lose 10+ marks here. We drill experimental design as a distinct skill alongside content delivery.

Exactly what the May exam tests.
Knowing the format and rubric is half the battle. Here is the full breakdown of the AP AP Chemistry exam.
Multiple Choice
60 questions. Calculator allowed throughout.
Free Response
7 FRQs — 3 long (10 min each) and 4 short (7 min each).
Experimental Design
At least 2 FRQs involve designing or interpreting experiments.
1 – 5 Scale
~12% nationally score 5. Our coached rate is ~50%.
Why even strong students miss a 5.
These are the three traps we see most often in AP AP Chemistry diagnostics — and every one is fixable with focused coaching.
ICE table errors
Equilibrium problems with ICE tables are worth 5–8 marks per FRQ. A single setup error cascades. We drill ICE tables weekly from week 3.
Sig figs penalties
AP Chemistry penalises significant figure errors on every calculation. Students lose 1–2 marks per FRQ from careless rounding.
Lab design gaps
Students who have never designed an experiment on paper lose the full 7–10 marks on lab-based FRQs. We drill experimental design as a distinct module.
From diagnostic to May exam.
My son went from a 3 predicted to a final 5 on AP Chemistry in four months. The FRQ drills and ICE table practice were what made the difference.
What families always ask about AP Chemistry.
Have a question about your child? Book a free 60-minute diagnostic and our AP specialist will answer every one.
Is AP Chemistry harder than AP Biology?
For most students, yes — Chemistry is more calculation-heavy and the FRQs require more mathematical precision. Students who are strong at maths tend to find Chemistry more natural.
Does AP Chem align with IB Chemistry HL?
There is significant content overlap (~70%). Students who have taken IB Chemistry HL have a head start. The main differences are the lab-based FRQ style and the scoring rubric.
What calculator is needed?
A standard scientific calculator is all that is needed — graphing calculators are allowed but not required. We use TI-84 for consistency.
Can AP Chem earn college credit for pre-med?
Yes — a 5 on AP Chemistry typically earns credit for General Chemistry I at most US universities, which is required for all pre-med programmes.
Ready to turn AP Chemistry into a perfect 5?
Your child's free 60-minute AP diagnostic includes a full content gap analysis, a realistic score prediction and a week-by-week roadmap to the May exam. Worth $60 — free for the first 50 families.
