IB Biology,
organised for memory
and IA success.
IB DP Biology HL and SL — the most content-dense Group 4 science. Full coverage of all 11 core topics plus HL extension, coached through a structured memory framework that turns the huge content load into exam-ready recall.
The IB's most content-dense science. Essential for medicine, biomedical sciences, environmental and biological programmes worldwide.
IB Biology is memory + keyword discipline.
IB Biology is the most content-dense science in the IB Diploma. Eleven core topics, seven HL-only extension topics, plus one chosen option — and a mark scheme that is strict about exact biological terminology. Students who try to "understand" IB Biology without a structured memory system consistently plateau at grade 5.
The vocabulary trap
"Active transport requires energy" scores nothing. "Active transport of ions against a concentration gradient requires ATP hydrolysis by membrane transport proteins" scores full marks. This keyword precision is the single biggest gap we close for new Biology students.
The IA
The Biology IA is worth 20% of the grade and demands an individual investigation — often a plant, fermentation or enzyme experiment. The mark scheme rewards specific, quantitative, controlled experimental design. Generic investigations cap at grade 4. We coach IAs to grade 6/7 standard as a baseline.
The full content we cover in 1:1 lessons.
Every Times Edu Biology mentor maps lessons directly to the official IB subject guide — nothing on the final exam is a surprise.
Cell Biology
Cell structure, membranes, transport, cell division.
Molecular Biology
Water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes.
Genetics
Meiosis, inheritance, genetic modification, biotechnology.
Ecology
Species, communities, ecosystems, climate change.
Evolution & Biodiversity
Evidence for evolution, natural selection, classification.
Human Physiology
Digestion, transport, defence, gas exchange, neurons, hormones.
Further Molecular Biology
Nucleic acids, metabolism, plant biology, animal physiology.
Internal Assessment
10-hour individual experimental investigation worth 20% of final grade.
Every paper and every IA, mapped.
IB assessment mixes exam papers with the Internal Assessment — and the IA is where most schools lose marks. Here is the full breakdown.
Multiple Choice
MCQ testing breadth of core and HL content.
Data + Structured
Data-response plus short and extended structured questions.
Data + Option
Experimental data plus one chosen option topic.
Internal Assessment
Individual experimental investigation with full written report.
Why even strong students lose IB points here.
These are the three traps we see most often in diagnostic sessions with new IB Diploma Biology students — and every one is fixable with focused coaching.
Wrong vocabulary
The mark scheme is brutal about exact keywords. Students who paraphrase lose the mark every time. We drill keyword lists weekly.
Weak IA statistics
The Analysis criterion rewards quantitative treatment — means, standard deviations, t-tests, error bars. Most students skip this and cap at grade 4.
Option paper neglect
Most schools teach the Option topic (Neurobiology, Biotechnology, Ecology, or Human Physiology) in DP2 only. Students who rush it lose 10+ marks on Paper 3.
Across HL and SL.
I was drowning in Biology content. Times Edu taught me a spaced retrieval system and my weekly mock grades went from 4s to 7s in two months. Final: 7 in HL Biology.
What families always ask about IB Biology.
Have a specific question about your child's situation? Book a free 60-minute diagnostic and our IB specialist will answer every one.
How much memorisation is realistic at IB Biology HL?
A lot — but structured. We use a spaced retrieval framework that makes around 400 key facts and 60 key processes feel manageable. Students who try to memorise without a system burn out by February of DP2.
Is IB Biology harder than A-Level Biology?
Similar content load. IB adds the IA (20%) and the Option paper; A-Level adds deeper mathematical modelling. Students who prefer coursework elements usually find IB more forgiving.
Can you help with a Biology IA that's already been drafted?
Yes — we regularly rebuild draft IAs in 4–6 sessions. The key levers are Analysis (adding quantitative treatment) and Evaluation (adding specific, actionable improvements).
Is HL Biology essential for medicine?
At most UK and Australian medical schools, HL Biology is strongly preferred but not always essential — HL Chemistry is more universally required. Confirm your exact target programmes early.
Ready to turn IB Biology into a full 7?
Your child's free 60-minute Biology diagnostic includes a full topic-by-topic gap analysis, a realistic grade prediction, an IA review and a personalised roadmap through to final May exams. Worth $60 — free for the first 50 families this intake.
