Calculus AB is the most popular AP maths — and the most predictable.

5
the target score — and the one our Calculus AB students consistently achieve

AP Calculus AB covers the equivalent of a first-semester college calculus course. The exam has a predictable structure — 45 MCQ questions plus 6 FRQs — and the content (limits, derivatives, integrals, differential equations, area/volume) repeats with modest variation year after year. This predictability makes it one of the most coachable APs.

Why FRQ technique matters

Section II FRQs are where most students lose the jump from a 4 to a 5. The rubric awards partial credit generously — but only if the work shown follows the specific format the College Board expects. We teach that format in week 1 and drill it every session.

The full content we cover in 1:1 lessons.

Every Times Edu AP Calculus AB mentor maps lessons directly to the College Board Course and Exam Description — nothing on the May exam is a surprise.

Exactly what the May exam tests.

Knowing the format and rubric is half the battle. Here is the full breakdown of the AP AP Calculus AB exam.

Embedded
SCORING

1 – 5 Scale

Composite score mapped to 1–5. Score of 3+ earns college credit at many universities.

~60% for a 5

Why even strong students miss a 5.

These are the three traps we see most often in AP AP Calculus AB diagnostics — and every one is fixable with focused coaching.

PITFALL 01

Skipping justification

FRQ rubrics award 1–2 marks per question for verbal justification ("because f' changes sign"). Students who write only numbers lose those marks every time.

PITFALL 02

Calculator over-reliance

30 of 45 MCQ are no-calculator. Students who rely on TI-84 at school consistently underperform on the non-calculator section.

PITFALL 03

Weak FTC understanding

The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus is tested directly or indirectly on every exam. Students who memorise rather than understand it lose 8–12 points.

I went from a 3 on the diagnostic to a 5 on the real exam. My mentor drilled every FRQ format until I could do them in my sleep. The College Board rubric had zero surprises.

What families always ask about AP Calculus AB.

Have a question about your child? Book a free 60-minute diagnostic and our AP specialist will answer every one.

Is Calc AB enough for engineering or should my child take BC?

For most US engineering programmes, AB is sufficient — BC earns slightly more credit but is not required. If your child is aiming for MIT, Caltech or Stanford, BC is stronger. We advise during the diagnostic.

How is AB different from BC?

AB covers a first-semester college calculus course. BC covers both semesters — adding series, parametric and polar. The AB subset is embedded inside BC. We teach both.

Can a student with weak algebra succeed in Calc AB?

With preparation, yes — but we usually recommend 4–6 weeks of pre-calculus review before diving into limits. We assess this in the diagnostic.

How many hours per week should my child study?

Most of our Calc AB students book 2–3 sessions per week for 12–16 weeks before the May exam. We recommend the exact cadence after the diagnostic.
