AP Calculus BC,
the full two-semester
college course.
The comprehensive AP calculus course — everything in AB plus series, parametric equations, polar coordinates and advanced integration. The strongest maths signal on a US college application.
Two semesters of college calculus in one exam. Series, parametric, polar and all AB content — the highest-value AP maths for competitive US admissions.
Calc BC is the strongest maths signal on a US application.
AP Calculus BC covers two full semesters of college calculus — everything in AB plus Taylor/Maclaurin series, parametric equations, polar coordinates and advanced integration techniques. A 5 on BC is one of the most powerful signals a Vietnamese student can send to a US admissions committee.
AB subset score
Students who take BC also receive an AB subscore. This means even if a student scores a 4 on BC, they may still earn a 5 on the AB subset — useful for credit at universities that only grant credit for AB. We coach both scores strategically.
The full content we cover in 1:1 lessons.
Every Times Edu AP Calculus BC mentor maps lessons directly to the College Board Course and Exam Description — nothing on the May exam is a surprise.
All AB Content
Limits, derivatives, integrals, differential equations — full AB coverage.
Parametric Equations
Derivatives and integrals of parametric curves.
Polar Coordinates
Area and arc length in polar. Converting between rectangular and polar.
Series & Convergence
Infinite series, convergence tests, Taylor and Maclaurin series.
Advanced Integration
Integration by parts, partial fractions, improper integrals.
Series Manipulation
Forming new series by differentiation, integration and substitution.
Error Bounds
Lagrange error bound and alternating series error bound.
FRQ Technique
BC-specific free-response formats and rubric navigation.
Exactly what the May exam tests.
Knowing the format and rubric is half the battle. Here is the full breakdown of the AP AP Calculus BC exam.
Multiple Choice
45 questions — 30 no-calculator, 15 calculator. Full BC content.
Free Response
6 FRQs — 2 calculator-required, 4 no-calculator. Includes BC-only topics.
Embedded AB Score
A separate AB subscore is generated from BC exam content.
1 – 5 Scale
~40% composite needed for a 5 on BC (lower threshold than AB).
Why even strong students miss a 5.
These are the three traps we see most often in AP AP Calculus BC diagnostics — and every one is fixable with focused coaching.
Series convergence confusion
Taylor series and convergence tests (ratio, comparison, integral) account for 15–20% of the exam. Students who cram series in the final week lose 8+ points.
Parametric derivative errors
dy/dx for parametric curves requires the chain rule applied correctly. Sign errors here cascade through entire FRQs.
Time management
BC has more content than AB in the same exam time. Students who spend too long on AB-level questions run out of time on BC-only questions.
From diagnostic to May exam.
Five 5s including BC. Times Edu gave me the series mastery I never got in class. The Taylor series FRQ was essentially free marks after our drills.
What families always ask about AP Calculus BC.
Have a question about your child? Book a free 60-minute diagnostic and our AP specialist will answer every one.
Should my child take BC or just AB?
If targeting MIT, Caltech, Stanford or any top-20 engineering programme, BC is stronger. For most other programmes, AB is sufficient. We advise based on target schools.
Can my child skip AB and go straight to BC?
Yes — BC contains all AB content. About 40% of our BC students have not formally taken AB. We bridge the AB foundations in the first 4 weeks.
How hard is the series unit really?
For most students, series is the hardest unit. It requires a different kind of mathematical thinking — convergence, error bounds, representations. We start drilling series early rather than leaving it for the end.
What calculator should my child use?
TI-84 Plus CE or TI-Nspire CX (non-CAS). We teach both. The calculator is allowed on 15 MCQ and 2 FRQs.
