AP Computer Science A,
Java from zero to 5.
The AP for students heading into computer science, software engineering and AI. Java programming, OOP, algorithms and data structures — with a focus on the FRQ coding problems that define the top score band.
The CS AP. Object-oriented Java programming, algorithms, data structures, arrays and recursion — taught by mentors with real software engineering backgrounds.

AP Computer Science A is a full introductory college-level course in Java programming. The exam tests OOP design, algorithm implementation, array/ArrayList manipulation and recursive thinking through 40 MCQ and 4 FRQ coding problems written by hand on paper.
Why hand-written code matters
Students who code fluently in an IDE often freeze when asked to write correct Java syntax on paper under exam pressure. The FRQ format requires handwritten code with correct signatures, return types and logic — and partial credit is awarded generously for correct structure even with minor syntax errors.

Every Times Edu AP Computer Science A mentor maps lessons directly to the College Board Course and Exam Description — nothing on the May exam is a surprise.
Primitive Types
Variables, expressions, assignment, casting.
Using Objects
String methods, Math class, wrapper classes.
Boolean & Conditionals
if/else, compound boolean, nested conditionals.
Iteration
for, while, nested loops, loop analysis.
Writing Classes
Constructors, methods, encapsulation, static.
Arrays
Array creation, traversal, algorithms on arrays.
ArrayList
ArrayList methods, traversal, search algorithms.
2D Arrays & Recursion
2D array traversal, recursive methods, merge sort.
Exactly what the May exam tests.
Knowing the format and rubric is half the battle. Here is the full breakdown of the AP AP Computer Science A exam.
Multiple Choice
40 questions on code tracing, output prediction and error identification.
Free Response
4 FRQs — write Java code by hand. Each tests a different OOP concept.
Handwritten Code
Complete method bodies, class implementations, array algorithms.
1 – 5 Scale
~27% nationally score 5. Clean code structure earns generous partial credit.
Why even strong students miss a 5.
These are the three traps we see most often in AP AP Computer Science A diagnostics — and every one is fixable with focused coaching.
Off-by-one errors
Array indexing and loop boundary errors are the single most common FRQ mistake. We drill boundary checking explicitly.
Missing edge cases
FRQ rubrics test edge cases (empty arrays, null values, single elements). Students who code the happy path only lose 2–3 marks per FRQ.
Poor class design
FRQ 1 always tests class writing — constructors, getters, toString. Students who skip OOP fundamentals lose the easiest 9 marks on the exam.
From diagnostic to May exam.
I had never coded before starting AP CS A in September. Times Edu taught me Java from zero. I scored a 5 on the May exam seven months later.
What families always ask about AP Computer Science A.
Have a question about your child? Book a free 60-minute diagnostic and our AP specialist will answer every one.
Does my child need prior programming experience?
No — we regularly start students from zero. The AP CS A course assumes no prior coding experience. With 6–8 months of focused coaching, a 5 is realistic.
Java or Python — which is tested on AP CS A?
Java only. AP CS A is exclusively Java-based. If your child knows Python, the transition to Java takes about 4 weeks of focused work.
Is AP CS A useful for non-CS university majors?
Increasingly yes — business analytics, economics, data science and even pre-med programmes value programming fluency. A 5 on CS A signals quantitative thinking regardless of major.
How does AP CS A compare to IB Computer Science?
AP CS A focuses purely on programming and algorithms; IB CS also covers theory (computer architecture, networks, databases). AP is more hands-on; IB is more theoretical.
