IB Mathematics:
Applications &
Interpretation.

The applied, technology-integrated IB maths course. Better suited to business, economics, social science and design students than AA — with a focus on real-world modelling and data analysis rather than pure proof.

The applied IB maths course. Technology-integrated, statistics-heavy, and designed around real-world modelling for business and social sciences.

Maths AI is real-world modelling, not pure theory.

7
the top grade, achievable by the vast majority of dedicated AI students with focused IA coaching

IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) is the applied maths course designed for students heading into business, economics, psychology, design and social sciences. Where AA emphasises proof and pure technique, AI integrates technology throughout — graphical calculators are used on every paper, and the IA often involves real-world data rather than abstract exploration.

HL or SL?

AI HL is a meaningfully harder course than AI SL — it adds statistics, further calculus, graph theory and linear algebra. SL is the right fit for most humanities-track IB students. HL is the right fit for quantitative economics, finance and data-adjacent pathways.

How Times Edu is different

Our AI coaches are a separate specialist group from our AA team. They teach the applied modelling mindset that the course actually rewards — identifying the right real-world question, choosing appropriate techniques, and interpreting results in context. This is genuinely different from AA teaching, and most classroom delivery does not distinguish the two.

The full content we cover in 1:1 lessons.

Every Times Edu Mathematics AI mentor maps lessons directly to the official IB subject guide — nothing on the final exam is a surprise.

TOPIC 1

Number & Algebra

Exponents, logarithms, financial maths, approximation.

TOPIC 2

Functions

Modelling with linear, quadratic, exponential and logistic functions.

TOPIC 3

Geometry & Trig

3D geometry, trigonometry in real contexts, Voronoi diagrams (HL).

TOPIC 4

Statistics & Probability

Heavily emphasised — sampling, testing, bivariate analysis.

TOPIC 5

Calculus

Differentiation, integration, differential equations in context.

SKILL

IA Exploration

Real-world investigation using statistical or modelling techniques.

SKILL

Technology Integration

Full TI-Nspire or GDC fluency — used on every paper including Paper 1.

SKILL

Interpretation

Explaining mathematical results in real-world context for full marks.

Every paper and every IA, mapped.

IB assessment mixes exam papers with the Internal Assessment — and the IA is where most schools lose marks. Here is the full breakdown.

PAPER 1

Short Answer

Compulsory short-answer questions. GDC allowed throughout.

HL 2h / SL 1h 30mHL 110 / SL 80
PAPER 2

Extended Response

Longer extended-response questions requiring full working.

HL 2h / SL 1h 30mHL 110 / SL 80
PAPER 3

Modelling (HL only)

Two extended investigations into real-world mathematical scenarios.

Mathematical Exploration

Individual 12–20 page investigation — often using collected real-world data.

Why even strong students lose IB points here.

These are the three traps we see most often in diagnostic sessions with new IB Diploma Mathematics AI students — and every one is fixable with focused coaching.

PITFALL 01

Missing the interpretation

AI specifically rewards explaining results in real-world context. "x = 2.3" scores 1 mark. "x = 2.3 years, meaning the investment doubles after roughly 28 months" scores full marks.

PITFALL 02

Weak statistics

Statistics is roughly 30% of AI. Students who have historically avoided stats find this the hardest adjustment. We drill it from week 1.

PITFALL 03

Low-ambition IA

Students who use simple linear regression as their whole IA cap at grade 4. We push for IAs that use genuinely appropriate techniques.

I switched from AA to AI in DP1 because I was drowning. Times Edu caught me up in 6 weeks and I finished with a 7. It was exactly the right course for me — I just needed coaching to see it.

What families always ask about IB Mathematics AI.

Have a specific question about your child's situation? Book a free 60-minute diagnostic and our IB specialist will answer every one.

How do I know if my child should do AI instead of AA?

If your child's target universities accept AI and they lean towards business, economics, psychology or humanities, AI is usually the better choice. The exception is competitive Economics programmes (LSE, Warwick) which often prefer AA HL. We advise based on target universities during the diagnostic.

Is AI easier than AA?

AI SL is slightly easier than AA SL for most students. AI HL and AA HL are roughly equivalent in workload but very different in character. "Easier" is the wrong question — "which fits better" is the right one.

Can we switch from AA to AI mid-course?

Yes, but there is a window — usually end of DP1 or early DP2 at the latest. We have helped many students make this transition. Book a diagnostic and we will advise.

Do universities view AI as lesser than AA?

For STEM programmes, yes — most top engineering and physics programmes prefer AA. For business, economics, social sciences and humanities, universities increasingly accept both equally.
