IB English B is the Group 2 language acquisition course taken by most Vietnamese IB students. It is designed for students whose English is functional but not first-language level, and it rewards consistent four-skill performance over brilliance in any single skill.
Why English B is the fastest-moving IB grade
Unlike Lit, English B has a defined vocabulary range, predictable paper structure and a mark scheme that rewards consistency over flair. Students who master the exam format typically gain 2+ grade bands in 12 weeks of coaching — this is the subject where we can most confidently promise measurable results.
HL or SL?
HL adds literature (two prescribed literary works) and has a longer Paper 1 writing task. SL is pure language acquisition. Students aiming for competitive UK or US universities should take HL if possible, as HL English B is widely accepted as proof of English proficiency (often alongside IELTS).

Is English B easier than English A Literature?
For most Vietnamese students, yes — English B has a narrower vocabulary range and a more predictable format, which makes it much more coachable. Native or near-native speakers should take A Literature; everyone else usually benefits more from English B.
Will HL English B be accepted by UK universities for proof of English?
Usually yes — HL English B at grade 5+ is accepted by most UK universities as proof of English proficiency, often in lieu of IELTS. Check the exact requirements of your target universities.
Can I prepare for IELTS alongside English B?

How much of the final grade comes from the Individual Oral?
